Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection which spreads through coughing, sneezing or close contact with infected skin sores. Symptoms may begin with a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and difficulty swallowing. In severe cases, the bacteria produce a toxin that can damage the heart and nervous system and may be life-threatening. Even with treatment, respiratory diphtheria can be fatal.

While it was once rare in Australia because of successful childhood vaccination programs, Australia is currently experiencing its largest diphtheria outbreak in decades, with cases reported in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia. Health authorities have declared the outbreak a national public health concern, particularly in remote and regional communities.

Immunity decreases over time, meaning adults need booster vaccinations. The Australian Immunisation Handbook recommends adults receive a diphtheria-containing booster every 10 years, especially people over 50, healthcare workers, travellers, pregnant women and those visiting outbreak areas.

If you fit these criteria, Stirling Central Health Clinic will be sending you a text message encouraging you to book in for a booster vaccination.
