From 1 July 2026, Australia has introduced a new pneumococcal vaccine, Capvaxive® under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). This vaccine provides protection against 21 strains of pneumococcal bacteria, helping to prevent serious illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections.
Capvaxive® replaces the previous adult pneumococcal vaccines, Prevenar 13® and Pneumovax 23®, simplifying the vaccination schedule and providing broader protection against disease-causing strains circulating in Australia.
The vaccine is now funded for all adults aged 65 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 25 years and over, and adults aged 18 years and over with eligible medical conditions that increase the risk of severe pneumococcal disease. Many people will only require a single dose.
The changes also mean that some people who have previously received a pneumococcal vaccine may be eligible for Capvaxive®, usually at least 12 months after their last pneumococcal vaccination.
Pneumococcal disease can be particularly severe in older adults and people with chronic medical conditions. Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of serious infection, hospitalisation and complications.
If you fit the criteria, Stirling Central Health Clinic will be sending you a text message encouraging you to book in to a vaccination clinic.
