Bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Australia. However, early detection can help prevent 90% of cases.
The Australian Government has lowered the eligible age for the National Bowel Screening Program from 50 years to 45 years. People aged 50 – 74 will automatically be sent a free home test kit every 2 years but people aged 45 – 49 can request their first free screening kit to be mailed to them.
The test is called a faecal occult blood test and looks for traces of blood in your faeces which are visible and could be a sign of bowel cancer.
