Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia with more than 25,000 men newly diagnosed each year. Fortunately, prostate cancer is slow growing and if detected early enough, men have an excellent chance of survival.
Possible symptoms of prostate cancer (which may also be caused by other conditions such as an enlarged prostate) include:
• Needing to urinate more often during the day or night (note: waking once a night can be normal as men get older)
• A sudden or urgent need to urinate that is difficult to stop
• Problems passing urine, such as:
o Straining or trouble starting
o Feeling like you can’t urinate even when you need to
o A weak stream that may stop and start
o Dribbling at the beginning or end of urination
o Discomfort or pain when urinating
o Feeling like your bladder isn’t completely empty
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to see your GP. Most of the time they are caused by non-cancerous conditions, but it’s important to get checked.
