Falls can lead to serious injuries, including fractures, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries, potentially resulting in long-term disabilities or even death.
Every day in South Australia, about 50 older people are admitted to a public hospital after a fall at home or in the community.
Maintaining good health is essential for reducing the risk of falls, especially as we age. By focusing on strength, balance, and overall wellbeing, you can stay active and independent while lowering the chances of injury.
Good balance is needed to move about confidently and safely, both inside and outside the home. So, what can you do?
• Be active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week – weight bearing exercise like walking is a good way to keep bones strong
• You need Vit D for muscles to work well. Sunshine on your skin for 10 minutes per day, early morning or late afternoon will boost your Vitamin D
• Eat foods that help your bones and muscles such as protein (meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans and nuts) and calcium (milk, yoghurt, cheese, sardines).
If you are worried about your health, balance or risk of falling, speak to your GP by booking an appointment on 8370 9777 or book online here. Your GP can help you with the next steps which may be to see a dietitian or an exercise physiologist.
