Keeping your heart healthy is the most important resolution you should make this new year.

In Australia, heart disease remains the leading single cause of death. One Australian dies every 18 minutes from heart disease.

In February, the Heart Research Foundation are focusing their spotlight on raising awareness of heart disease by wearing red and sharing prevention information.

It is suggested that simple changes to your lifestyle can help prevent heart disease. Some simple steps you may consider include:

1. Movement – Exercise is a healthy way to stimulate the body and increase blood flow to your heart. No matter your age or fitness level, begin with 30 minutes of exercise per day and develop a routine to suit your schedule!

2. Meals – Avoiding processed foods and fostering a balanced diet is a healthy habit. Try to incorporate seasonal produce, whole grains and seafood to your weekly meal plan.

3. Measurement – Keeping track of blood pressure, cholesterol levels and weight can help determine changes and trends of your body. Annual heart checks should be conducted with your GP from the age of 45, or 30 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

4. Mental Wellness – The mind is a powerful organ and it is important that we prioritise a positive mindset. Some ways to do this include developing positive social connections, practicing mindfulness, managing stress and stimulation of the brain through crosswords or Sudoku!
