As of 10th January 2025, South Australia has recorded a total of 1,000,364 cases of COVID-19 since 2020. Already in 2025, there have been 220 cases reported.
However, these statistics only tell part of the story as the President of the Australian Medical Association in South Australia, Dr John Williams reiterated recently. He said that because many people with COVID no longer get tested or report their illness, the numbers of people in the community who have had COVID, would be higher.
It is important not to become complacent about COVID because research published in the Medical Journal of Australia indicates that one in seven COVID positive patients had at least one persistent symptom three months after the infection. The risk of long COVID remains an issue for consideration given that one in five patients with clinical long COVID reported moderate impairment 12 months after the infection.
